– History of Dromkeen –

Built in 1889, Dromkeen was once the country estate of Judge Arthur Chomley and later became home to the world famous Dromkeen Picture Book Art Collection. Nestled in the Macedon ranges in the tiny hamlet of Riddell’s Creek, Dromkeen is only 30 minutes drive from Melbourne Airport. This stately National Trust home has beautiful gardens with a range of Australian native and European plants, a gazebo and two resident peacocks.

– Today –

Guests to Dromkeen are able to visit our Tea Room, browse in the galleries or wander around the beautiful gardens which have trees more than 100 years old, some listed on the National Trust register.

– Historical Tours –

Historic Tours of Dromkeen Homestead are available by appointment for groups. The tour includes a short media presentation, a walk around the gardens and a tour of the Homestead. Special packages can include lunch or morning/afternoon tea with a tour. A minumum of 20 people is required.

The Hush Collection Exhibition April 11 – Sept 16

Our current exhibition curated by Books Illustrated is The Hush Collection from the Hush Treasure Book. It features original illustrations and models from the book’s cover design.

The Hush Treasure Book is a wonderful collection of stories, poems and artwork by some of Australia’s most loved children’s book creators. It was specially commissioned by the Hush Foundation and includes a CD featuring a compilation of Hush music compositions.

– Exhibition Space –

Gallery Space 1 is approximately 14 metres in length by 7 metres wide.


– Functions –

Dromkeen has a separate function centre available suitable for hire for conferences, business seminars, professional development and children’s birthday parties. A second room has a wet area that could be used for art classes. Catering is available. Enquiries bernadette@dromkeen.com.au

– Weddings –

Dromkeen has a beautiful outdoor gazebo and garden setting available for hire for weddings or simply for photograph shoots. Our function centre is suitable for weddings of up to 60 people.


– Facilities –

The Dromkeen Garden Room is fully airconditioned and has an industrial kitchen with a commercial oven, large refrigerator and dishwasher. There are tables and chairs to seat up to 60 people. Audiovisual equipment and lectern also available for hire.


Tea Room/Cafe

– Menu –

Open 10am – 4pm Thursday through Saturday, our daily menu contains a selection of delicious cakes, devonshire tea, toasted sandwiches, specialty pies and weekly specials and of course, Tea and Coffee. Breakfast is served all day on Saturday. Family friendly, highchairs available upon request. 


School Visits

– Groups –

Dromkeen is open to visiting school groups and tertiary institutions.  Offering the opportunity for students to participate in day workshops run by visiting illustrators and authors of Australian children’s picture storybooks.  We tailor the day’s activities to address learning outcomes that individual schools or groups wish to address.

– School Gallery Program –

Dromkeen also has a gallery program where visiting students browse through picture books, and original illustrations. We also view and discuss preliminary work to highlight the publishing process that authors and illustrators use, from the initial idea, author’s first draft, editing, storyboards, rough drawings, book design, printing and the final finished book.

– Writing Camps –

Dromkeen now offers either 1-day writing workshops or 3-day writing camps with award winning author and illustrator Mark Wilson, for groups of up to 45 students from Grades 4-6.  Students write and illustrate their own picture storybook.

– Holiday Programs –

Dromkeen offers a range of school holiday programs for students in drawing and illustration. Other special events are held during the school term. Please continue to check our website and Facebook page for updated information.
